In 1905 Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law Alfred Davies founded "Wilsdorf and Davies" in London to supply Swiss movements in cases made by Dennison and others, to jewellers in England who then put their name on the dial. However, in 1908, Wilsdord registered the name "Rolex" and opened an office in Switzerland.
In 1919 Wilsdorf moved the company to Geneva, Switzerland and established the Rolex Watch Company. On the death of his wife in 1944, Wilsdord established the Wilsdorf Foundation in which he left all his Rolex shares, making sure that some of the company's income would go to charity.
Among the major invovations by Rolex was the introduction of a wristwatch with an automatically changing date (Rolex Datejust 1945), waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner 1953) and  with two time zones (GMT Master 2 1954).
Rolex Watches are popularly regarded as status symbols and the brand is ranked amongst thea top 100 most valuable gobal brands.
