The Cartier Santos is recognized as the first true Cartier wristwatch and is named after Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Brazilian aviator. The Cartier Santos series was introduced in 1904 and the jeweled Cartier Santos wristwatches soon followed after the success of the original Santos. Louis Cartier later created and patented the deployment-folding clasp for the Cartier Santos series in 1910.

Created in 2006 by Cartier to honour the memory of María Felix, a well known actress, mainly in Mexico and South America. She inspired artist to paint her, composers to write songs for her and had many of the French designers like Christine Dior, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent etc., dress her! The La Doña de Cartier watch with reptilian links was created to impress by its wild look. The case of the La Doña de Cartier features a trapezoid shape with asymmetrical profile reminding a crocodile's head. The wristband of the watch resembles the contours of a crocodile in large, bold and gold scales.
